Congratulations to Professor Jun Yu on Receiving RGC Theme-based Research Scheme Funding

Research Project Led by our Associate Editor Professor Jun Yu Awarded More Than HK$55.69 Million to Advance Precision Care for Gastrointestinal Cancer.

A research project led by Professor Jun Yu, Associate Dean (Mainland Affairs) of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been awarded more than HK$55.69 million in funding.

Entitled "The Microbiome in Gastrointestinal Cancers: Mechanistic Investigation and Clinical Applications," the project aims to elucidate the role of the gut microbiome in gastric and colorectal cancers and translate cutting-edge findings into precision strategies for cancer prediction, prevention, and treatment.

Professor Jun Yu is internationally recognized for her outstanding contributions to gastrointestinal cancer research, particularly to understanding cancer mechanisms and advancing cancer prevention and treatment. Building on her distinguished research background, the multidisciplinary team will integrate advanced microbiome technologies, single-cell analysis, and artificial intelligence to identify key cancer-associated microorganisms and develop microbial biomarkers capable of predicting treatment responses.

The team will also investigate innovative microbiome-based strategies, including probiotics, postbiotics and phage-based interventions, with the aim of improving cancer prevention and treatment. The project is expected to drive significant advances in gastrointestinal cancer research, improve personalized cancer care, cultivate research talent and contribute to Hong Kong’s biomedical innovation ecosystem.
