Abstract
This interview with Professor Manfred Lenzen explores the persistent gap between advancing knowledge on carbon footprints and the continued rise in global emissions. Reflecting on decades of research, he highlights structural barriers - including economic growth imperatives, globalized supply chains, and policy inertia - that hinder the translation of scientific insights into effective action. The discussion emphasizes the critical role of academia not only in generating knowledge but also in actively engaging with policymakers, industry, and the public to drive real-world impact. Professor Lenzen also examines the limited uptake of consumption-based accounting in policy and behavior, noting challenges in governance frameworks and public awareness. Tracing the evolution of his own work, he underscores a growing recognition of systemic complexity and interdependence in sustainability issues. Looking forward, the interview calls for urgent, coordinated changes across research, policy, and society, with a stronger focus on accountability, behavioral shifts, and globally aligned strategies to achieve meaningful reductions in carbon footprints.
