Special Topic Introduction
With the rapid advancements in the field of biomedicine, the innovation of functional materials and the precision construction of functional microstructures have emerged as the cornerstones of contemporary medical research. By deeply integrating biomaterials with biological structures, researchers can now implement the rational design of complex biological systems from their fundamental logic, thereby effectively modulating biological responses and enhancing clinical efficacy. This trend is driving a paradigm shift in biomedical research and development: a transformative leap from traditional singular, static molecular models toward modular, programmable, and dynamically responsive sophisticated architectures. Against this backdrop, we are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for our Special Topic, "Biomaterials and Functional Microstructures for Biomedicine." This collection aims to showcase the most advanced progress in next-generation materials regarding drug delivery, structural regulation, and biomedical applications. We warmly invite researchers worldwide to submit Original Research Articles, Review Papers, and Perspectives on topics including, but are not limited to: Innovative Biomaterials: Advanced drug delivery systems for nucleic acids (e.g., LNPs and polymers), proteins/peptides, and small-molecule therapeutics, as well as emerging materials designed for intelligent delivery and precision regulation Functional Microstructures: DNA/RNA origami, self-assembling nanocages, nucleic acid structures and biological functions, computer-aided design of nanostructures, engineered exosomes, natural nanoparticles, hydrogels, nanozymes, and biomimetic catalytic structures. Mechanistic Elucidation and Therapeutic Translation: Structure-performance relationships, interfacial interactions between materials and biological systems, and clinical translation in metabolic, cardiovascular, oncological, and other disease areas. This Special Topic is dedicated to bridging the gap between fundamental structural design and practical clinical applications, providing a high-impact platform for academic exchange within the biomedical community.
