Special Issue

Topic: Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Robotics: Enhancing Transparency, Trust, and Autonomy
Guest Editors
Special Issue Introduction
With the rapid adoption of intelligent robotic systems in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, defense, and autonomous vehicles, the need for explainable, interpretable, and trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) models has become essential. While AI-driven robotic systems are achieving impressive performance, the black-box nature of many learning algorithms poses safety risks in critical scenarios and undermines human trust. This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research that addresses the intersection of Explainable AI (XAI) and robotics, focusing on methodologies, frameworks, and applications that enhance transparency and accountability in autonomous decision-making by robots. We invite original research articles, review papers, and case studies exploring how XAI can be utilized to make robotic systems more understandable, fair, safe, and efficient in human-robot interaction (HRI), control, perception, planning, and learning.
Topics of Interest include (but are not limited to):
● Explainable AI techniques for robotic perception and decision-making;
● Interpretable reinforcement learning for robotic control;
● XAI in human-robot collaboration and interaction;
● Trustworthy and ethical AI for autonomous robots;
● Causality and reasoning-based explainability in robots;
● Transparent planning and navigation in autonomous agents;
● Visual and linguistic explanation interfaces for robots;
● Evaluation metrics for explainability in robotic systems;
● Applications of XAI in healthcare robots, drones, smart manufacturing, etc.;
● Hybrid models combining symbolic reasoning with deep learning for interpretability.
