Topic: Artificial Intelligence in Perioperative Medicine

The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in perioperative medicine transcends the notion of AI as a replacement for doctors (specifically anesthesiologists-resuscitators), or as a decision-maker in their stead. Rather, the objective lies in equipping medical professionals with precise tools to enhance the quality of data utilized for daily clinical decision making; that is, furnishing doctors with supportive tools to tackle routine challenges, thereby augmenting clinical decision making) processes. Hence, the application of AI and all new technologies (NT), such as telemedicine (TM), wearable devices (WD), and metaverse in Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Perioperative Medicine, is intended to improve various aspects of the discipline, extending even to pain management and emergency situations. Additionally, these emerging technologies are also fundamental for educating our students, including simulation, augmented and virtual reality models.

AI can amplify a doctor's ability to interpret, adapt to, and effectively respond within a complex healthcare landscape. With the aid of these novel tools, healthcare professionals bear the moral responsibility of steering this transition, ensuring the ethical and sustainable development of these technologies while avoiding being overwhelmed by them. This necessitates the establishment of a hybrid model, fostering integration and thereby facilitating the evolution toward a "single intelligence".
