Special Interview with Dr. Tadahisa Sugiura: New Editorial Board Member of the Cardiac Surgery Section at Mini-invasive Surgery
On June 20, 2025, the Editorial Office of Mini-invasive Surgery (MIS, ISSN: 2574-1225) had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Tadahisa Sugiura, the newly appointed Editorial Board member for the journal’s Cardiac Surgery Section.

Q1. With your extensive clinical experience in structural heart disease and end-stage heart failure, what do you see as the main advantages and challenges of TAVR versus SAVR? How do you envision the future development of these two techniques?
Q2. How do you view the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in cardiac surgery? In which areas do you believe AI has the greatest potential to transform cardiac diagnosis, treatment, and research?
Q3. You have emphasized the importance of patient selection for ECMO use in the cardiac catheterization lab. Could you elaborate on how patient selection can be optimized in clinical practice to improve ECMO outcomes?
Q4. How do you assess the current role of minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic-assisted surgery, in cardiac surgery? How do you foresee these technologies advancing cardiac surgery and improving patient prognosis?
Q5. As a new Editorial Board member of Mini-invasive Surgery, what valuable suggestions do you have for the journal's future development? In which areas should the journal strengthen its efforts to better serve researchers and clinicians in cardiac surgery and related fields?

Dr. Tadahisa Sugiura
Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, USA
Dr. Tadahisa Sugiura, MD, PhD, is an attending surgeon and Assistant Professor at Montefiore-Einstein, specializing in cardiothoracic surgery. His clinical expertise includes structural heart disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, end-stage heart failure treatment, ECMO, and cardiothoracic organ procurement.
Educated and trained in both Japan and the United States, Dr. Sugiura earned his MD from the University of Tsukuba and his PhD from Tokyo Women’s Medical University. He completed advanced fellowships at the Texas Heart Institute and Montefiore-Einstein.
His research focuses on cardiac regenerative therapy, iPS cell research, and stem cell medicine. Dr. Sugiura has published extensively and serves as a reviewer for leading medical journals such as The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine.
